Trial and Error

It takes trying on different face masks to finally find one that you are happy with. It’s normal to find CPAP masks that does’nt fit your face on the first trial. There are a lot of attributes that one need to look for when searching for the right CPAP masks. The straps of the masks must fit the patient’s face perfectly and not cause discomfort. There are different kinds of face masks – from full face masks to nasal pillows. Full face masks are great for people who have minimal movements in their sleep and who are not claustrophobic. But nasal pillows are great for people who dont move too much in their sleep. It’s best for the patient to try on different kinds of face masks and choose one which they are comfortable with.

Combination of mask and machine settings

The success of a face mask depends on the machine used as well. The therapy’s success will depend on the patient’s need and preference of air pressure, which in turn depends on the severity of their condition. A CPAP machine will give a constant pressure of air supply through the machine. The constant pressure which cannot be changed may work well for patients who do not need a change in air pressure and whose condition is not too severe. However, patients who require a change in pressure of the air supply may need a different machine than the CPAP. Some patients find the constant air pressure of the CPAP machine hard to use, as exhalation of the same amount of air inhaled is hard with a CPAP. The BiPAP machine is great for those who dont prefer the air constant pressure of the CPAP machine as it has two pressure settings. The APAP machine is even more versatile with it’s pressure settings as the pressure levels can be tweaked to one’s preference. APAP is also a better option for patient whose condition is considered severe.

CPAP machine takes time to show results

When a patient suffering from sleep apnea finally finds a therapy with it’s promises, it’s hard not to expect instant results if not miracles. Once the search for the CPAP machine is on and the patient has zeroed in on a machine a lot of trepidation and excitement is involved. But once they buy it many realise that it is not that simple to find the best CPAP mask. A lot of trial and error may be involved. But one thing future CPAP wearers should understand is that even a great CPAP machine takes time to display the results you have been expecting. CPAP machines are not a miracle machine. They require time to show it’s best potential. So it is best to buy a good CPAP machine and take it easy.

For best results, make the lifestyle changes to see good results with CPAP

As the previous point mentioned, it is easy to  get carried away when one buys a good CPAP machine and expect it to perform miracles. One of the greatest caveats a CPAP buyer should be aware of is that CPAP machines are best when combined with other long-term lifestyle changes. Previous blogs focus on lifestyle changes in detail. These changes need to be made along with the CPAP therapy to show lasting results. One of the best lifestyle changes to be made is weight loss. This change can really take you towards better results along with the CPAP therapy.

It is great that OSA patients have some great treatments these days. By keeping the above points in mind, OSA patients can keep a realistic picture in mind while starting their journey into wellness.
